An alternative primary treatment process utilising continuous deflective separation (CDS) technology combined with a flocculation process has been developed at the pilot plant level and is now undergoing field evaluations. In the first field trial, the process treated sewage to a quality that allowed effective disinfection. The effluent was stored in an open basin within an urbanised area without any notable odour or aesthetic issues. This strategy will enable the water authority involved to store sewage during high flow periods saving significant capital outlay for upgraded sewerage or enclosed storage.
