A new successive approximation approach algorithm designing optimal controller is developed fornonlinear active magnetic bearings systems. By constructing a sequence of linear two-point boundary value(TPBV) problems that uniformly convergent to the optimal solution for the systems, the original optimal con-trol problem is transformed to a sequence of nonhomogeneous linear TPBV problems. The optimal controllaw consists of an accurate linear term and a nonlinear compensating term. In the present approach only thenonlinear compensating term, solution of a sequence of adjoint vector differential equations, is required iteration.
