Methods may enable splitting of storage/validation nodes from mining nodes in a blockchain network using atomic exchange mechanisms. A non-mining node (e.g. a storage/validation node) may generate a (partial) candidate block 402 containing transactions including a source transaction with an output associated with the non-mining node, and a miner transaction (e.g. a miner reward) that includes the source transaction output as an input and a second output associated with a particular miner. The non-mining node may determine a payload summary (e.g. a Merkle root), and send it to the miner 404 along with the miner transaction, a first summary path therefor (e.g. a Merkle path), and a header containing the summary. The miner may validate the miner transaction 406 based on the summary and path, mine the header with nonces 408 until a proof-of-work solution is found 410, and send a solution value to the non-mining node 414. In another embodiment, the miner may send a hash of the solution to the non-mining node, which then generates the miner transaction locked by the solution, sends it to the mining node, and receive the solution from the miner (fig. 2). The non-mining node then propagates the block 416.
