An exemplary method of determining a storage operation parameter based on a data stream attribute includes: receiving, by a controller, a write command specifying, by a controller, a data item and an identifier of a data stream comprising the data item, wherein a portion of the identifier of the data stream is encode data attributes shared by data items included by the data stream; determining a storage operation parameter using the data attribute; and sending a command to the memory device specifying the data item and the storage operating parameter.
