A permanently excited synchronous machine (10) and a control method for a permanently excited synchronous machine (10) are disclosed. The permanently excited synchronous machine (10) can be operated with different magnetization levels (MN1, MN2 .... MNN). The magnetization levels (MN1, MN2,... MNN) to be switched to are selected such that the switching losses (SV) and motor losses (MV) are minimized.
