Catheter insertion device with improved flashback response

In various embodiments, an improved catheter insertion device is described that provides improved flashback response and use for deep vein access. In various embodiments, the improved flashback response is two, the first indicating the insertion of the cannula into the blood vessel and the second indicating the insertion of the catheter into the blood vessel. Includes separate and distinctly different flash events. The two flash responses are made possible by a combination of features provided on the cannula, including a viewing window in the cannula and a flat relief portion on the outer surface of the cannula at the distal opening.
