The invention relates to a method for operating a traction battery (2) for a motor vehicle (1),with a first battery unit (7) and a second battery unit (8),which are electrically connected in series between two electrical connections (5, 6) of the traction battery (2) in a first switching setting of a switch assembly (10) and electrically parallel to the electrical connections (5, 6) in a second switching setting of the switch assembly (10). It is provided that, if a current limit value is exceeded by the current of one via the electrical connections (5,6) a voltage of the first battery unit (7) is compared with a voltage of the second battery unit (8) and, when a difference limit is exceeded by a difference between the voltages, the battery units (7, 8) are electrically separated from the electrical connections (5, 6) and for charge exchange by means of the switch arrangement (10) electrically connected in parallel. The invention further relates to a traction battery (2) for a motor vehicle (1).
