An image matching method based on bidirectional optimal matching point pairs, the method comprising: S1. using proof by exhaustion to perform bidirectional matching, obtaining an optimal matching point in a target image for a feature point in an original image as well as an optimal matching point in the original image for a feature point in the target image, and forming two sets of optimal matching point pairs; S2. calculating a bidirectional optimal matching point pair set according to the two sets of optimal matching point pairs; S3. eliminating wrong matching points in the bidirectional optimal matching point pair set; S4. calculating the transformation relationship between the two images according to reserved bidirectional optimal matching point pairs; S5. selecting matching point pairs satisfying the transformation relationship from among the two sets of optimal matching point pairs obtained in Step S1; and S6. obtaining an acceptable correct matching point pair between the two images. In the described method, enough correct matching point pairs can be retained on the premise of introducing only a small number of wrong matching point pairs, the amount of calculation when eliminating wrong matching point pairs is greatly reduced, and an accurate and stable transformation relationship between the two images is calculated.
