The invention relates to a method for determining a safety status of at least one safety-related system requirement of an automation system, the automation system having a plurality of devices, with the steps: (a) providing at least one technical function of the device for the respective safety-related system requirements, b) providing a status the at least one technical function of the device; c) providing at least one analysis result by analyzing the state, taking into account the safety-related system requirements, and d) creating a signal based on the at least one analysis result, the signal signaling the safety state. The invention is used, among other things, in an automation system in the form of a production plant, a computer network, a hospital patient information system, a track or signal system, a smart home installation, and/or an electric vehicle.
