ASSESSMENT OF THE USE OF STORAGE SYSTEM CAPACITY

Techniques and architectures for estimating the capacity of storage systems are disclosed. Deduplicated data and an index of object entries are managed in a storage system. The entries contain flat reference values. The flat reference counts display a number of parent metadata objects that contain a reference to the corresponding object. One or more tree milli indexes and one or more node milli indexes of object entries are managed in the storage system. The entries correspond to a subset of thestored objects. The entries also have shortened object signature values and deep reference counts for the corresponding objects in the storage system. The capacity utilization of the storage system is determined on the basis of an analysiswhere the deep reference count values are used to perform various multiset operations.
