The invention relates to a steer-by-wire steering system (6) for a motor vehicle (1), having at least one sensor unit (7) for detecting a current steering position of a manually operable steering unit (2) of the motor vehicle (1), at least one with the Sensor unit (7) connected electronic unit (8), which is set up to generate a steering command depending on the current steering position of the steering unit (2). In order to implement train-drift compensation in the steer-by-wire steering system (6), the electronics unit (8) is set up to determine, on the basis of instantaneous vehicle dynamics data detected by sensors, whether the motor vehicle (1) is moving while driving is in a straight line, to determine whether the current steering position of the steering unit (2) deviates from a straight line position while the motor vehicle (1) is traveling in a straight line over a period of time of a predetermined length and/or over a route of a predetermined length, and a compensation steering command, taking into account a deviation the instantaneous steering position of the steering unit (2) from the straight-ahead position and to combine it with the steering command to form a corrected steering command if the instantaneous steering position of the steering unit (2) while the motor vehicle (1) is traveling straight ahead for a period of a predetermined length and/or over the route of the specified length deviates from the straight-ahead position t.
