A method for producing a product comprising one or more bio-based substances selected from the group consisting of fatty alcohols, fatty alcohol alkoxylates, fatty alcohol polyglycosides, fatty alcohol sulfates, fatty alcohol alkoxylate sulfates and mixtures thereof is described. The invention also relates to a product which can be produced using a method according to the invention. Finally, the invention also relates to the use of a vegetable oil or a fatty acid alkyl ester produced from vegetable oil as a starting material in a process involving a cross-metathesis reaction for the production of a product. The present invention is in the technical field of surfactants and, as far as products aimed directly at consumers are concerned, in the technical field of detergents, cleaning agents and cosmetic products.
