A GARMENT WITH A TRANSPARENT FACE SHIELD FOR USE AS PART OF A PERSONAL PROTECTION SYSTEM, AND THE PERSONAL PROTECTION SYSTEM

A garment (102, 236) is described for use as part of a personal protection system (30, 178, 390) including a helmet (32, 180), at least one electrically powered assembly (92, 266, 268, 272) mounted to the helmet, a sensor (404) on the helmet form monitoring presence of said garment, and at least one control member (120, 134, 262, 264) mounted to the helmet and actuatable to control the at least one electrically powered assembly. Said garment includes a shell(104, 238) formed with an opening (106) and adapted for being disposed over a helmet of the personal protection system and at least the head of an individual wearing the system, the shell formed from flexible material that forms a barrier between the individual and the surrounding environment. Said garment further includes a transparent face shield (110, 240) secured over the opening in the shell and positioned so that, when the garment is disposed over the helmet, the face shield is located in front of the face of the individual, and at least one fastening feature (148, 246) mounted on the face shield for releasably securing the transparent face shield to the helmet. At least one conductor (124, 125, 128, 130, 144, 146) is formed on an inner surface of the transparent face shield. Said conductor is in electrical contact with said fastening feature such that, when the garment is disposed over the helmet, said fastening feature engages a complementary electrical contact integral with the helmet so as to establish an electrical connection between the garment and the helmet.
