Propulsive drug delivery from the swallowable device to the patient's intestinal tract

Embodiments of the present invention provide swallowable devices, formulations and methods for delivering drugs and other therapeutic agents within the GI tract. Certain embodiments provide a swallowable device, such as a capsule, for delivery of a drug or other therapeutic agent (TA) to the GI tract wall, such as the stomach or small intestine. A swallowable device comprises a sensor, a combustible propellant (CP), and a therapeutic agent formulation (TAP) comprising at least one TA. The sensor triggers the CP to ignite the TAP and propel it to the GI tract wall in response to external conditions or changes in external conditions. Embodiments of the present invention are particularly useful for orally delivering drugs or other TAs that degrade within the GI tract and require parenteral infusion.
