An embodiment of the present disclosure relates to a method for preparing a metal-ligand complex, the method comprising: reacting a (L 1 )H compound with a base in a primary solvent to include an intermediate anionic L 1 compound in the primary solvent preparing a reaction mixture to and reacting the intermediate anionic L 1 compound with the L 2 MX 3 complex to prepare a L 1 L 2 MX 2 complex, wherein L 1 and L 2 are independently cyclopentadienyl-type (Cp-type) ligands , M is zirconium or hafnium, each X is a halide, and the intermediate anionic L 1 compound is not isolated from the reaction mixture.
