According to an aspect, a wireless device, while in an RRC inactive state, determines that a radio access network notification area update (RNAU) is needed. The wireless device further evaluates whether there are any other causes of resuming the RRC connected state in addition to the need for an RNAU. The wireless device, in response to the determination, sends an RRC resume request message to the network. The RRC resumption request message includes a cause indicator indicating the RNAU as a cause for resuming the RRC connected state, if the evaluation has not identified another cause for resuming the RRC connected state.
