By making a modified novolak-type phenol resin adhere to a graphite particle, the graphite particle with resin is obtained. At least a part of the surface of the graphite particles is coated with a carbonaceous film by heating the resin-adhered graphite particles at 900 to 1500° C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to carbonize the modified novolak-type phenol resin. Among the arylene groups constituting the modified novolak-type phenol resin, 5-95 mol% is an arylene group having a hydroxyl group. The obtained carbonaceous-coated graphite particles are excellent in battery characteristics when used as a negative electrode material for a lithium ion secondary battery.
