PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve one or more of comfort, cost, effectiveness and manufacturability of a medical device used in monitoring or diagnosing a respiratory disease. A subject's sleep / wakefulness is determined at each epoch of the session using actigraphy data obtained during the surveillance session. Actigraphy data provide information about the patient's activity during the epoch. Sleepfulness or wakefulness is determined based on the ratio of the activity count during the epoch to the activity count during the preceding epoch. If this ratio is higher than the first activity threshold, "awakening" instructions may be provided, for example, by the system.
