Acknowledgment and Negative Responses Disclosed are joint channel estimation and data detection techniques for decoding uplink control channels using redundant resource elements in uplink control channel transmission. To improve the performance of the decoder, channel estimation can be performed with reference signals (pilot symbols) to identify the characteristics of the channel at a given position within the subframe. However, for some uplink control channel formats, there is no dedicated position for the reference signal / symbol, and therefore channel estimation is not performed. Acknowledgment and negative response resource elements can be the same, so at the same location in two different types of messages, the mobile device can replace the resource element at the redundant location with a reference signal, thus The receiver can perform channel estimation using the reference signal, which can improve the ability to decode the remaining acknowledgment and negative response transmissions.
