A hearing system (2) shall be specified to support the hearing ability of a user comprising at least one hearing instrument worn on the head of the user (4). A procedure for operating the hearing system (2) is also indicated. At least two input converters (6) of the audio system (4) record a sound signal from a user environment and convert it into input audio signal (I1, I2). The hearing system (2) consists of two adaptive amplifiers (28, 28a, 28b) with variable pitch direction (N),which are applied directly or indirectly to the input audio signal (I1, I2) in order to produce a directionally muted audio signal (R) respectively. Notch directions (N) are set to different values so that the energy content of the direction-dependent silenced audio signal (R) of each operator (28, 28a, 28b) is minimized. The emergency directions (N) of the two officers (28, 28a, 28b) are evaluated comparatively. A user's head rotation is recorded qualitatively and/or quantitatively if a correlated change in the direction of the note (N) is detected during the comparative evaluation.
