A method of joining a first workpiece (40) to a second workpiece (44), the method comprising: placing the first and second workpieces in an overlapping arrangement and applying an adhesive (42) between the adjacent surfaces of the first and second workpieces; applying a first compressive load (15) to a spot weld location (45) in connection with the overlapping arrangement of the first and second workpieces; wherein the magnitude of the first compressive load is sufficient to remove adhesive (42) from the spot weld location ( 45) in connection with the overlapping arrangement of the first and second workpieces, releasing the first compressive load; applying a second compressive load (19) and applying vibration excitation by a vibration welding device (12) to the point for the spot weld in connection with the overlapping arrangement of the first and second workpieces; the interruption of the exercise ns the vibration excitation by the vibration welder and the maintenance of the second compressive load on the spot weld in connection with the overlapping arrangement of the first and second workpieces for a period of time.
