PULSED SYNAPTIC ELEMENTS FOR PULSED NEURAL NETWORKS

Embodiments of the invention are directed to the transmission of signals between neurons of a pulsed neural network (or SNN) implemented by means of hardware. The network has neural connections, each of which has a synaptic unit that connects a presynaptic neuron with a postsynaptic neuron. The presynaptic neuron of each neural connection first frequency modulates based on a synaptic weight stored in each synaptic unit to generate postsynaptic impulses so that a first number of impulses received by the presynaptic neuron is converted into a second number of postsynaptic impulses. At least some of the impulses received from the presynaptic neuron can each be converted into a sequence of two or more postsynaptic impulses. The generated postsynaptic impulses are then transmitted to the postsynaptic neuron of each neural connection. The novel use makes it possible to obtain a higher dynamic range at the synapse output.
