The present invention relates to a modified virus, eg, an oncolytic vaccinia virus, which has been modified to include an exogenous nucleic acid expressing a protein that modulates STAT3 activity. The present invention relates, at least in part, to the discovery that a vaccinia virus modified to include a nucleic acid encoding PIAS3 expressing PIAS3 or a fragment thereof can inhibit STAT3 activity and enhance the anticancer activity of vaccinia virus. based on Accordingly, the present invention provides an oncolytic vaccinia virus and a cancer treatment method using the same.
