The invention relates to a method for identifying image artifacts in a chronological sequence of images (23) captured using a lighting device (5) and an optical sensor (7), wherein - the lighting device (5) and the optical sensor (7) are displaced by a self-movement, - the lighting device (5) and the optical sensor (7) are actuated in a synchronized manner over time, - at least two successive images (23) are captured by the optical sensor (7) using the synchronized actuation over time, - a movement field with movement field vectors (25) of the at least two successive captured images (23) is calculated, - all movement field vectors (25) which can be expected on the basis of the self-movement are removed from the movement field, whereby a differential movement field is obtained, - the movement field vectors (25) in the differential movement field are combined in order to form image-side objects (27) according to at least one grouping criterion, and - the image-side objects (27) are subjected to a movement plausibility check, by means of which the image-side objects (27) are classified as plausible or not plausible, and an image-side object (27) classified as not plausible is identified as an image artifact.
