A light detection and ranging (LIDAR) device is provided that includes a light source configured to emit an optical beam. The LIDAR apparatus further includes free space optics configured to receive the first portion of the optical beam as the target signal and the second portion of the optical beam as the local oscillator signal, and to combine the target signal and the local oscillator signal. A LIDAR device includes multiple multi-mode (MM) waveguides configured to receive a combined signal.
