The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a mixed oxide material, comprising the steps of: a) preparing a mixture of starting compounds containing molybdenum, vanadium, niobium and tellurium and also containing two chelate oxo ligands, b) said starting compound hydrothermal treatment of the mixture at a temperature of 100° C. to 300° C. to give a product suspension, c) isolating and drying the solids present in the product suspension produced in step b), d) obtained in step c) and activating said solid material in an inert gas. The present invention also relates to a mixed oxide material for the oxidation of ethane, which can be prepared by the method according to the invention, comprising the elements molybdenum, vanadium, niobium and tellurium and having a stoichiometry Mo 1 V a Nb b Te c O x ( where 0.27 < a <0.31; 0.08 < b <0.12; 0.08 < c < 0.12) and with diffraction reflections h, i, k and l in XRD using Cu-Kα radiation, the peaks of which are approximately the diffraction angles ( 2θ) at 26.2°±0.5°(h), 27.0°±0.5°(i), 7.8°±0.5°(k) and 28.0°±0.5°(l), to the mixed oxide material.
