A dynamic positioning system (102) comprises first, second and third position reference systems (108, 112, 114) respectively configured to generate first, second and third position data, where the systems (108, 112, 114) are operationally independent of each other. A controller (110) is operably coupled to the position reference systems (108, 112, 1140 and configured to identify a position deviation from at least two of the first, second and third position data. The controller (110) issues a vessel movement correction in response to determining that the position deviation is unwanted. The first position reference system (108) is an acoustically aided inertial dead reckoning navigation system comprising an inertial measurement unit (120) co-located with and operably coupled to a Doppler velocity log measurement unit (122). The Doppler velocity log measurement unit (122) is configured to generate raw acoustic observation data. The acoustically aided inertial dead reckoning navigation system (108) is configured to use the raw data to improve accuracy of position estimates calculated by the inertial measurement unit (120).
