Compositions and methods are provided for graphene reinforced polyethylene terephthalate (PET).Graphene nanoplatelets having suitable surface areas are added to a dispersion medium for producing graphene Reinforced PET.The average surface area can be substantially between 15 m2 / g and 750 m2 / g.In some embodiments, the dispersion medium may comprise ethylene glycol.The dispersion medium and graphene nanoplatelets are ultrasonically processed to disperse nanoplatelets into the dispersion medium.The dispersion medium and graphene nanoplatelets are centrifuged to remove larger nanoplates that are not suitably dispersed in the dispersion medium.The supernatant solution of the dispersed graphene nanoplatelets and the dispersing medium is decanted and then used for the polymerization of graphene Reinforced PET.The graphene Reinforced PET obtained comprises a continuous matrix of pet having a reinforcing material containing a graphene nanoplateter dispersion phase.
