A composite component comprises a reinforcement which is connected by means of a connection to a base component which is formed by or is reinforced with a localized coupling in the base component. The connection can be formed by the manufacture of ultrasonic additives. The localized coupling can include compression of the base component, a weld in the base component, or a heat affected zone of the weld. When the connection is formed by the localized coupling, the localized coupling surrounds the reinforcement. If the connection is reinforced by the localized coupling, the localized coupling may surround the reinforcement or be located at an inner radius of a turn in the reinforcement. The reinforcement produces improved properties in the composite component, for example a lower density, improved strength, rigidity or energy absorption capabilities.
