A renal failure therapy machine (10, 110, 300, 310) is described. The machine comprises: a blood cleaning filter (20, 30); a dialysis fluid circuit (60, 330) that includes a balance chamber (340) having a fresh dialysis fluid compartment (344) that is configured to send fresh dialysis fluid to the blood cleaning filter and a used dialysis fluid compartment (342) that is configured to receive used dialysis fluid from the blood cleaning filter; a fresh dialysis fluid line (314) that is in fluid communication with the fresh dialysis fluid compartment (344) of the balance chamber (340) and the blood cleaning filter (20, 30); and a flow restrictor (40) that is in fluid communication with the blood cleaning filter (20, 30). The flow restrictor (40) is configured to cause fresh dialysis fluid delivered from the fresh dialysis fluid compartment (344), through the fresh dialysis fluid line (314), to the blood cleaning filter (20, 30) to be pressurized so that a first amount of the fresh dialysis fluid performs convective clearance and a second amount of the fresh dialysis fluid performs diffusive clearance.
