The present invention discloses an apparatus and method for checking the time without turning on the screen. According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided an apparatus for checking time without turning on a screen, comprising: a motion information receiver configured to receive gesture motion information input to a touch screen from a user while operating in a sleep mode; a determining unit that determines whether the received gesture action information is information for calling visual information; a conversion unit for converting current time information into voice using a text to speech (TTS) engine when the gesture action information is determined as visual information call command information; and an output unit for outputting the visual information converted into the voice to the user.
