This fusion splicer comprises an imaging unit, a determination unit, and a splicing unit. The imaging unit captures images of a pair of optical fibers to generate imaging data. The determination unit determines the type of each of the pair of optical fibers on the basis of a plurality of feature values obtained from imaging data from the imaging unit. The determination unit employs determination results from either of a first and a second determination algorithm. The first determination algorithm is predefined using a method other than machine learning on the basis of the correlation between a plurality of feature values obtained for optical fibers from imaging data and the types of said optical fibers. The second determination algorithm includes a determination model. The determination model is created by machine learning that uses sample data that indicates the correspondence between a plurality of feature values obtained for optical fibers from imaging data and the types of said optical fibers. On the basis of determination results from the determination unit, the splicing unit fusion splices the pair of optical fibers per splicing conditions that correspond to the combination of types of the pair of optical fibers.
