A beamforming codebook update method for improving analog beamforming gain is provided. A method of updating a beamforming codebook includes receiving, at an antenna array of a wireless communication device during a previous period, a first directional electromagnetic signal comprising a beam sweeping reference symbol of a previous beam sweeping period, and comprising: processing circuitry of the wireless communication device; using, calculate an estimated combined channel based on the received first directional electromagnetic signal, and use the processing circuit to form two or more beams corresponding to different angles-of-arrival Measure a dominant angle of arrival of the first directional electromagnetic signal based on the measured combined channel and a previous beamforming codebook comprising the vector, and use the processing circuitry to measure one or more points spaced from the measured dominant angle of arrival.
