Improve your listening before speaking wireless communication

A method of wireless communication includes selecting, based on a field in a message received by a wireless device, an access procedure mode for accessing a wireless network when a condition occurs; and performing, by the wireless device, an access procedure according to an access procedure mode for accessing the wireless network when the condition occurs. In some embodiments, the disclosed techniques may be used to improve the performance of a wireless network by reducing the number of listen-before-speak attempts that a device must make before it can successfully access the wireless network.
