PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an artificial liver using high function liver cells.SOLUTION: [1] There is provided an extracorporeal artificial liver provided with at least one module including the following: a plasma component inlet port and a plasma component outlet port; a plasma component circulation chamber provided with the plasma component inlet port and the plasma component outlet port; and a liver cell cultivation chamber disposed adjacent to the plasma component circulation chamber, which is separated from the plasma component circulation chamber by a separation membrane that transmits ammonia, but does not transmit liver cells, where liver cells having ammonia metabolic ability are cultivated. [2] In the artificial liver described in [1], the plasma component circulation chamber is disposed above the liver cell cultivation chamber.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
