The apparatus includes an error correction code circuit and an error correction code selection circuit. The error correction code circuitry may be configured to encode and decode data using any of a plurality of error correction codes. The error correction code selection circuit is configured to determine which of the plurality of error correction codes is error correcting for encoding and decoding data in response to one or more reliability characteristics and predetermined data characterization distribution characteristics of each of the plurality of error correction codes. It can be configured to control whether it is used in the code circuit.
