Provided are a method for reporting the release of a secondary cell group (SCG), and a terminal device, wherein the method comprises: under a dual-connection architecture, when there is an energy-saving requirement, a terminal device sending a non-passthrough message that includes first auxiliary information to a first network device, wherein the first auxiliary information indicates a reason for releasing an SCG, and the non-passthrough message is non-passthrough with regard to the first network device. In the embodiments of the present application, a network device can decide whether to release an SCG according to the energy-saving requirements of a terminal device.
