A test system for detecting impairments on board a motor vehicle comprises an electronic control unit (ECU) and sensors that are connected to it. The sensors are positioned in a vehicle interior and include at least one touchscreen and a microphone and possibly a camera for eye recognition. In response to the receipt of a start request which indicates a desired start event of the motor vehicle, the ECU executes instructions to initiate a cognitive reaction test via the sensors. The ECU determines a test value of a driver during the test while the motor vehicle is turned off, compares the test value with base values to determine a passed or failed test result, and performs a control action on board the motor vehicle in response to the passed or failed test result the end. The ECU can deactivate or shut down the motor vehicle in response to the failed test result.
