A communication system for air traffic control of an airspace comprises at least one voice communication system (14), at least one air traffic management system (12) and at least one radio ground station (16) configured to communicate with a radio (26) having a voice over internet protocol identification. The radio ground station (16) has an internet protocol interface (20) via which the radio ground station (16) is connected with the voice communication system (14). The voice communication system (14) and the air traffic management system (12) are interconnected with each other. The air traffic management system (12) comprises a display (22) that is configured to display information obtained via the radio ground station (16). Further, a method of controlling air traffic of an airspace is described.
