Substrate electrode (SE) interface irradiated photoelectrode and photoelectrochemical cell

A photoelectrode for a photoelectrochemical cell is disclosed. The photoelectrode comprises a back contact solar cell having emitter and collector contacts spatially separated by a first opening. The emitter contact and the collector contact are collected on the emitter bus bar and the collector bus bar, respectively. The photoelectrode further includes a contact passivation layer that separates the emitter and collector contacts from the electrolyte when in use. The contact passivation layer further has a second opening corresponding to the first opening. The photoelectrode further allows, in use, such that only charge carriers from the emitter contact are directed in the direction of travel across the contact passivation layer to the electrolyte, while charge carriers from the collector contact are collected on the collector bus bar. A resin layer is provided to cover the opening and part of the contact passivation layer. Electrocatalyst layers that respectively cover the resin layer and / or the contact passivation layer are further provided. [Selection] Figure 1
