The present disclosure relates to a computer implemented system and method for batch pickup optimization. The system includes one or more memory devices for storing instructions; and one or more processors configured to execute instructions, the instructions configured to: receive an order including one or more items via a communication network; calculating one or more high-density areas within a fulfillment center, using a shortest path search algorithm to calculate distances between a first item of the one or more items and at least one other of the one or more items; calculate one or more high-density regions by calculating nearby neighboring items, and selecting a plurality of nearest neighboring items to create a high-density region; for one or more items, store a distance between each item and a nearest second item; generate a batch based on the calculated one or more high-density regions; adding items from one or more high-density areas to the batch based on the item that increases the average distance the least among the pickupable items using the digital map to determine an exchange of items that will increase the quality of the batch; provide, via the communication network, the digital map and instructions along with the list of items to collect into the batch to the user device for display; receive, via the communication network, detailed information about the batch and scanned item data; and to update the digital map based on detailed information about changes and placements associated with the loaded items.
