The present invention provides for the production of a monoclonal antibody or fragment thereof recognizing the L protein of human parainfluenza virus (PIV), wherein said monoclonal antibody or fragment thereof comprises a variable region of a heavy chain and a variable region of a light chain. Also provided is a method for diagnosing infection by PIV in a biological sample using the monoclonal antibody in the form of a diagnostic kit.
