An electrochemical cell that cyclically moves lithium ions is provided. The electrochemical cell includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode, a separator disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, and a lithium phosphate (Li3PO4) -coated lithium-lanthanum-zirconium oxide (LLZO) material. The Li3PO4-coated LLZO material is a particle with a substantially spherical core that contains the LLZO and a layer that contains the Li3PO4 and directly coats at least part of the substantially spherical core, the substantially spherical core having a diameter of is less than or equal to about 100 µm; a nanowire with an elongated core containing the LLZO and a layer containing the Li3PO4 and directly coating at least a portion of the elongated core, the elongated core having a length of less than or equal to about 10 mm and a diameter of less than or is equal to about 100 µm; or a combination of these.
