PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide printable composite materials for colorimetric sensing applications to solve the problem in which colorimetric assays are rapid and inexpensive but provided in limited test strips.SOLUTION: A composite material includes: particles that include a sulfonated polyester and a wax; and metal nanoparticles disposed on surfaces of the particles. A method includes: fusing the composite material to a substrate; and covalently linking a ligand to the surfaces of the silver nanoparticles via a thiol, carboxylate or amine functional group. Detection strips include a substrate and such composite materials fused to the substrate.SELECTED DRAWING: None
