The invention relates to a mechanical test device comprising at least one load frame (4a, 4a', 4b, 4b', 4c, 4d, 4e, 4f, 4g, 4h, 4i, 4j, 4k, 4l, 4m) having a frame part (5, 5a, 5b, 5c, 5d, 5j, 5', 5") and a clamping device (6a, 6a', 6a", 6b, 6b', 6b") retained in same, in which a bar-shaped test object (1), in particular a rotor blade or rotor blade segment, can be clamped such that it projects through the load frame. The load frame is rotatably mounted in a first pivot bearing assembly on a carrier frame (14, 14') or a support frame (15) about a first transverse axis (9) of the test object, which runs perpendicular to its longitudinal axis (8) projecting through the clamping device, and the frame part has a rotational symmetry of order 4, in particular a square shape, or a circular ring shape. The design of the load frame/s results in a simple rotatability/adjustability of the test object. According to a method for carrying out the test, the natural system frequencies can be coordinated with one another in different loading directions in an appropriate manner.
