Provided are SiC ceramics having excellent thermal and mechanical properties in a normal temperature and high temperature environment as well as being dense even when fired at a relatively low temperature, and a method for producing the same. SiC fine particles having an average particle size of 300 nm or less are prepared, and a coating layer having an average particle size of about 1 to 10 nm is formed on the surface thereof by a vapor phase method or a liquid phase method. This coating layer may contain Al. The powder composed of the coated SiC fine particles prepared in this manner is sintered at a temperature of 1600 ° C. or higher and 1900 ° C. or lower. As a result, it is possible to obtain a SiC sintered body having excellent thermal and mechanical properties in a normal temperature and high temperature environment as well as being dense.
