1,1-bis-(3,4-dimethylphenyl)- using nitric acid in a pressure vessel to produce 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid with the simultaneous formation of nitric oxide. In the method of oxidizing an alkane, passing nitrogen oxide from a pressure vessel to an absorption vessel, and reacting the nitrogen oxide in the absorption vessel with molecular oxygen and water to produce an aqueous nitric acid solution avoids the risk of oxygen inhibiting nitric acid oxidation and reduce nitric acid consumption when nitric acid from the absorption vessel is used for the oxidation of 1,1-bis-(3,4-dimethylphenyl)-alkane.
