The invention comprises a method for transmitting security settings (SE) between a first automation engineering field device (FG1) and a second automation engineering field device (FG2), comprising: a. identification and authentication of a user by means of an operator control unit (BE1, BE2, BE3); b. allocation of an authorization group on the basis of the identification and authentication of the user; c. in the event that the user is assigned the administrator authorization group: i. encryption of at least one of the security settings (SE), which is available in plain text, by the first field device (FG1); ii. export of the encrypted security setting (SE); iii. import of the encrypted security setting (SE) on the second field device (FG2); iv. decryption of the encrypted security setting (SE); v. loading of the decrypted security setting (SE) onto the data memory (DS2) of the second field device (FG2) and operation of the second field device (FG2) using the loaded security setting (SE) of the first field device (FG1).
