METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR REGISTERING A PHYSICAL SPACE TO IMAGE SPACE

The present invention relates to a method of registering image space and physical space with a computer aided navigation system, comprising: acquiring image data to define the image space, wherein the image data includes a plurality of points having a sub-plurality of fiducial points; extracting surface points in the acquired image data including the sub-plurality of fiducial points; comparing a first two-dimensional template to the plurality of points; determining an initial list of points from the plurality of points as the sub-plurality of fiducial points from the plurality of points based on comparing the first two-dimensional template to the plurality of points; determining a final list of points as the sub-plurality of fiducial points; identifying a plurality of fiducial markers in the physical space that are imaged in the acquired image data; and registering the image space to the physical space based on the determined final list of points and the identified plurality of fiducial markers. The present invention also relates to a computer aided navigation system to navigate a procedure having registration between image space and physical space.
