The present application relates to compositions comprising selenium (eg, selenium fortified yeast and selenium containing compounds obtained or derived therefrom) and methods of use thereof to treat and inhibit obesity, diabetes and related conditions. In particular, the present application discloses a composition comprising a selenium-fortified yeast (e.g., a selenium-fortified yeast comprising up to 2% inorganic selenium), a selenium-containing compound present therein and/or derived therefrom, and mitochondrial activity and function. Methods of use thereof to improve (eg, in skeletal muscle and liver) in a subject (eg, as a therapeutic and/or prophylactic therapy for diabetes, obesity and related conditions) are provided.
